Week 3 in Batey 8
Thursday, July 19th, 2012So, we got our 2nd Paseo last Saturday. We went to Neiba and visited “Las Caritas de los Indios caves.” We went up there and enjoyed a lot. Some students and community members went on top of the cave. Then we went to see someplace and we got to see a lot of iguanas. We took pictures and fed the little and strange creatures. We also saw the “Lago Enriquillo” (which is the largest body of salty water in the Caribbean) while we moved on the truck. Then we went really close to the border of the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Then we went to “La Zurza.” There, there were three swimming pool, but we had to get into the children one. We could not get into the deep ones. Why?? Ask 2012 Batey 8 GP staff. Sunday: We had a workshop in the morning about homosexuality and had a really good discussion about the topic for about 1 hour and a half. In the afternoon, we went to Batey 1 to play soccer with all GP Delagation (New York, Boston, France, and the community members from each Batey. And finally I got to see my brother who is in Batey 1 (I didn’t see him for about 12 days). We talked a lot. He showed me his house and we had a really good time talking and playing soccer :D. Monday: I started my intership at the Clinic with Ammie. The doctor talked to us about medicine and what she usually does while she’s at the Clinic. And she taught us how to weigh people. We saw more than 10 patients. Most of them had fever, flu, headaches, high blood-pression, etc. Then the doctor would give them a note to pick up the medicine on the pharmacy and some of them to go to a bigger hospital either in Tamayo or Barahona. Tuesday: Dan and I had a really good conversation about my Independent/personal project. He helped to set up everything and we planned out the first class which is going to be on Fridays and take place on the Basketball court of Batey 8. My project is going to be a Marching class for about 4 classes of 2 hours (4:00pm-6:00pm). Community members will learn how to be discipline and respect their parents and surroundings. And they will be able to develop their leadership skills and to be on time whenever they have to.
